Something new for something old. I bought a PMGR (permanent magnet, gear reduction) starter from !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to replace the string of 4 remanufactured O'Reilly's starters I've had on and subsequently off the '67 Mustang.

It came highly recommended by some forumites, I'll let you guys know how the install and performance goes once it gets here.

On a side note, O'Reilly quality has been slipping lately. My brother has replaced 5 alternators under warranty, about every 6 months. I've done 4 starters, and I killed a balljoint after only 15,000 miles.

Looks like MasterPro brand is going to lose my business.

Is that a comment on the sadness of O'Reilly parts getting worse, or the fact that I put part-chain parts on my classic auto?

O'Reilly is the closest place to me, so this causes some concern on my part. Also, because I was considering picking up an alternator from there and, well, they're the most reasonable.

The updated 'mini' starters are absolutely the way to go. Going to the updated design (started in ~93?) made all the difference in the world starting my fox 5.0.

Could you let me know how well it cranks. I've got one of this type to go on the Spit 6 (mainly because it's lighter), but it won't be fitted for a while. I'm slightly skeptical that it'll be as good as a standard-type starter, but I'm open to persuasion.

I still shop there, but I may try something a little better than the rock bottom brand next time. They have always honored the warranty, I have never paid for another one, but it gets a little old replacing them endlessly.

On the plus side, I can replace a starter without a floorjack in under an hour now, even with long-tube headers.

My brother can do an alternator in 20 minutes on his Mazda, including AC compressor and serpentine removal.

Certainly. I've heard nothing but good about them, and it can't get worse than the ones I've had, so I'm hoping for an improvement.

That's good to hear, I'm hoping it will have a similar improvement for me.
